Walking Distance

As always, I encourage you to live within walking distance of most of places you need to go on any given day, such as work, the bar, the supermarket etc. It’s not just good for the environment, all of that extra low stress exercise is good for your body too. Well that, and then there is this:

Broken Platform

Over 10 oil platforms and rigs have disapeared from the surface of the Gulf of Mexico, though the number will probably be quite a bit higher by the time all is said and done. That doesn’t even count poor specimens like the one pictured above, which will likely take months or years of work to get back online. This is a problem. While shortages will likely be localized and brief, cheap gas has come and gone.

    Chris,

    My mother always used to say the same thing — live someplace that is within walking distance of food, transportation, school, and a laundramat. Mr. Jane gassed up the cars Monday night, in expectation of a price hike. We sat down last night and figured planned out how, if we need to, we could manage getting to work and the kids to school without using the cars at all.

    Sometimes I think about buying a bike. It would be great exercise and it’s getting to be a nicer time of year for biking, but I’m not in tip top shape, my asthma medication ran out and I’m too lazy to fill it, plus it’s a far and very trafficky ride. I guess I’ll just keep pinching my pennies even harder and they’ll squeal even louder.

    if it’s not raining, i’m on my bike anyways for my 40 block commute. i expect to see more bikers on the road in the next few days/weeks/months. people will be priced out of their cars.
