I just want apartments to stay at some sort of reasonable level. I want a nice little place somewhere in the region of 16-20 St / Walnut-Pine. Is that so much to ask?

It's never gonna happen though. Blah. University City, here I come.

I can't complain too much because I did get in on the house thing 9 years ago. But I just wanted to say, that it also sucks to be old and underpaid. :)

Real estate prices right now are sick. My fiancee and I are house-hunting right now, I kinda wanna stay in the city more than she does because she's lived in the city her entire life (southwest and then just South Philly) whereas i moved down here for college and just stayed.

Anyhoo, we looked in Queen Village, Washington Square, and the Art Museum area and there is, pardon my french (or is it "pardon my freedom") NO FUCKING WAY IN HELL that i'm paying $400,000 for a 1000 sq ft rowhouse with no yard.

I'm all for staying in the city and whatnot, but if we're gonna move someplace way down in South Philly by the stadiums or whatever, might as well go another ten minutes to Delaware County and cut my car insurance in half.

Ben mentioned University City, but ever since Judith Rodin put in that program to try and get Penn employees to buy in that area, it's becoming pretty damn expensive out that way too. (And i'm by no means saying that her doing that was a bad thing. I think it's great that she tried, and in alot of cases succeeded, in getting Penn professors to live in the community where they teach.)

So, Chris, I might be moving. The only registered Republican in your neighborhood will be gone.

Jeff, this is awful news, and for the sake of the community, I hope you kids can work out an arrangement to stay. If you do leave, I wonder if there is some sort of agency we can contact to get them to send us a new Republican for the neighborhood? Delaware county has plenty of them. Perhaps we can work out some sort of a trade. We'll send you and a hard core socialist in exchange for a gun enthusiast and a fast food chain or a 7-11. Just to keep some balance around here, I may wind up having to take out some advertisements on the Free Republic or something.

Yeah, the housing front is total madness. My wife and I just finished a two month house hunting adventure that produced nothing other than frustration and lost time. We're lucky in that our landlord didn't raise our rent this year, and for what we get (2 floors and a roof deck) the price is unbelievable, if a little steep for us. The price is low, in part, because the apartment is very out of date and the common hallways smell like dog urine (long story). Anyway, the situation probably isn't sustainable for much longer because studio condominiums on our block are going for just a little south of half a million right now. At some point the owner is going to wise up and sell out. Then, we're really (pardon my freedom) fucked, and probably on short notice to boot. We’ve talked to the landlord about buying the unit in its current condition, but so far they just aren’t interested. I wonder why?

The mixed feelings on this one are funny because I couldn't be happier that Philadelphia is doing well, Center City is spreading, and people seem really excited to be here and are willing to pay big money for the privilege. At the same time, the affordable, fun lifestyle I've enjoyed my entire adult life is going to be out of my reach within a few years.

The funny thing about it is, we're looking at places that are like a mile from the border between SW PHilly and Delaware County, it's not like we're going so far away, but the thing that always makes both of us nervous and causes us to really consider whether we wanna move out there is when we're driving around down there, and whereas bars in the city have banners out advertising "hey, watch the Phillies" or "Watch the Eagles" here, bars out there tell people to come in for the NASCAR race.

That's REALLY scary.

Shit, man, $400,000 for a measly rowhouse with no yard? I'd rather be murdered! For that price, they should be paying you to live there (personally, it'd solve the homeless problem...that and the Ralphie Wiggum payment system, imho.) WTF is wrong with these people? Housing is a necessity, not a privilege, dammit! Everybody has the right to own a house. The Ralphie Wiggum payment system consists of a paper clip, a penny, a carton of chocolate milk, a string, and a few broken crayons.
