Not a Chance in Hell

Billmon hits the nail on the head when he writes that the only realistic strategy for stopping the Roberts nomination would be for Senate Democrats to “bork him like nobody has ever been borked before”. That’s the only thing that would make the process even modestly uncomfortable for the Republicans, and it would require the mother of all shitstorms. Since Roberts has failed to produce much more than a yawn at this point, the pertinent questions are; would it work and will it happen? My answer is in the title.

And what would make Senate Democrats stop yawning? Their constituents to start causing a roucous.

    Indeed.

Let me amend that indeed just a little. I have so little faith in the backbone of the Democratic party, that I can’t imagine them throwing a serious challenge to a perceived “consensus” candidate, regardless of the raucous caused by the constituents or the base. The backbone front has improved somewhat since the election, but there is still a very long way to go before I can imagine them having the fortitude to really stand up against anybody south of Dobson.

That said, you have a platform here, as well as other places. If you feel like it, use this platform to throw some shit at the wall and see if any of it sticks. Scream until it hurts. I’m all for a ruckus, so don’t hold back.

Blaise, I really do mean it. I’m all out of ammo right now so if you want to start shouting about this, or anything else, 20 times a day, go for it. No time like the present.

I helped organize a local petition drive for MoveOn PAC. Nationally, we got over 300,000 signatures. Now while that won’t directly result in Roberts’ rejection, it will at least send a clear message to the current administration this will not be allowed to be another case of rubber-stamping. It will also tell the Dems to either start making noise or risk getting hosed at the next elections.
