Oh, Dear

I don’t usually jump on items that the big bloggers are talking about, but this post has to be the funniest thing I’ve ever seen in my life. If you confuse a Fred Phelps funeral protest, for some sort of leftist anti-war protest, you really are too stupid to be allowed near a computer or pretty pictures. Either that, or we all need to figure out what sort of experimental drugs this Marc character is taking. Who knows, It could make for a truly whacked weekend.
Update: It looks as though he’s updated his post and well, um, wow. I won’t try to parse the update, it’s something you really need to see for yourself. I’ll just say that after reading the little rant, that I feel as though a Koala just crapped a rainbow in my brain. (thanks to Coturnix for keeping me informed)

I don’t understand anything about this. What was the actual protest? (feeling rather dim…)

The protest was led by Fred Phelps, who is quite notorious for holding protests (more like celebrations) at the funerals of gays. He’s a standard issue paranoid freak with some talent for publicity and hatred. At the moment he is holding his protest/celebrations at the funerals of service personnel killed in action in Iraq and Afghanistan, because he feels America has turned against god because it doesn’t embrace his ideology.
His current bit has something to do with thanking god for IED’s, or improvised explosive devices. As much as I detest the far right, it’s not at all fair to lump him in with them, though he does often gets placed there due to his homophobia. The bit that makes the post I linked to funny is that the writer in question was under the mistaken belief that Phelps is some sort of a left wing, hippie freak rejoicing in the death of a warrior or whatever. It’s really all so confused, and gets all the more confused when the author attempts to strengthen his argument in his update.
For more on Phelps have a look at this entry in the Wikipedia. This passage is particularly illuminating:
During 1993-1994 interviews with the Topeka Capital Journal, four of Phelps’ children asserted that their father’s religious beliefs were either non-existant to begin with or have dwindled down to nearly nothing since his conversion to Baptism; they claim that Westboro serves to enable a paraphilia of Phelps, wherein he is literally addicted to hatred (this statement would serve as the inspiration for the title of the book about Phelps’ life). Two of his sons, Mark and Nate, claim that the church is actually a carefully planned out cult that allows Phelps to see himself as a demigod, wielding absolute control over the lives of his family and congregants, essentially turning them into slaves that he can use for the sole purpose of gratifying his every whim and acting as the structure for his delusion that he is the only righteous man on Earth. In 1995, Mark Phelps wrote a letter to the people of Topeka to this effect; it was run in the Capital Journal newspaper.
The children’s claim is partially backed up by B.H. McAllister, the Baptist minister who ordained Phelps. McAllister said in a 1993 interview that Phelps developed a delusion wherein he was one of the only people on Earth worthy of God’s grace and that everyone else in the world was going to Hell, and that salvation or damnation could be directly obtained by either aligning with or opposing Phelps.
Sorry to be obscure ACM. I hope that helps.

Oh, I think you can do better than that. For instance, how about doing a search of my blog using Phelps name. Then you will find an even better update like this one:
http://ussneverdock.blogspot.com/2005/07/america-deranged-funeral-update.html
In that post you will find some nice family photos of Phleps, his wife, Al Gore and his wife hugging each other. Yes that Al Gore, failed DEMOCRATIC presidential candidate.
You will also see where Phelps was invited to DEMOCRATIC Vice President Al Gore’s inaugration.
And you will discover that Phelps once ran for Govenor of Kansas - as a DEMOCRAT.
You will also discover that Gore is anti-gay.
All of which proves just because you are anti-gay doesn’t mean you’re on the right. Even some on the left are anti on gay issues.
In that search of my blog you will also find who else protests at military funerals.
http://ussneverdock.blogspot.com/2005/07/america-fred-phelps-revisited.html
Someone like, Lt. Gov. Catherine Baker Knoll - a Democrat.
And from Wikipedia we learn more of Phlep’s Democratic associations.

Yes Phelps is a pretty funny guy alright.

well the phelps rejects came to delaware and will be at another soldier protest tomorrow here. in the same small “REDNECK” town. maybe they’ll see again tomorrow they are not welcome here. there were hundred of us. they were prtesting a soldiers funeral. for people who dont like soldiers and their funerals, they sure do go to alot. if they hate the USA they can leave at any time, the border swings both ways. I love the RED WHITE AND BLUE (patriotic colors as they are) that they have. i think he’s gay and thats why they are gay haters. I wonder how the dick that was with them liked getting his face beat in when some one finally got sick of them and jumped the barrier. then every one (100’s) rushed them and started taking well needed wacks at them. as i understand it they love to give abuse they might as well learn to recieve it. van windows got busted out and tires slashed and tomorrow will be no different. i cant wait. i wonder if old freddy knows that god sends people who commit suicide to hell ( so i have heard) well lucky for him is attempt in 1968 didnt work. or maybe unlucky for us. apparently it is he is suspected of killing or plotting to kill debbie valgos. he probably did since god is only sending him to heaven he wont burn in hell for it. this is the way i see it, if i am going to hell, i cant wait to get there and stand next to him. i know we are playing into just what they want. we show up, the media shows up and writes an article about them. thats just what they want, but sometimes you just have to give in and give someone the satisfaction. well any way i had to vent.
