Do you have to be a “computer professional” to go to these? Or do you just like to hang out with computer professionals?

  2. Chris Says:

While I’m certainly not the right person to answer this question, as David is the founder of Computer Professionals of Center City, I should think that if you really like to hang out with “computer professionals” David would be more than happy to provide you with a name tag.

Here’s the question Ruth — would you really want to? It is, after all, not what you would call the hippest group in town, and I say that as a (charter?) member. Nevertheless, the bar is open to the public and I’d be more than happy to chit chat about non “computer professional” related matters if anybody would be so kind as to engage me in such a conversation.

I just want to add that while it may seem odd to allow David (my very first guest poster who has been nice enough to post anything) to post announcements on this, very political site, for a professional organization, I don’t see it that way at all. My hope for this site is that it will eventually serve as both a liberal political outlet, as well as a place where people interested in a vital urban America can promote their ideas and projects. In my view a fledgling, inner-city organization for computer professionals is a wonderful example of the latter.

Obviously, I have a very long way to go.

“Why would you want to” - poor computer geeks, never get any respect! If I could actually get a babysitter for a Tuesday night I’d probably to to “Drinking Liberally” - have you ever checked that out? Do people actually show up?

But I hope the Computer Professionals have fun!

  4. Chris Says:

What, your kids don’t like bars?

Yes, I’ve gone to Drinking Liberally a few times and people do indeed show up - sort of. I’ve managed to combine the two events a few times - 1 or 2 hours at Drinking Liberally - stroll over to the Irish Pub to commiserate with my fellow geeks - begin the stroll home - stop half way there and blow a few hours at Dirty Franks - stagger home to my waiting wife and cat -they’re always so thrilled to see me.

The first Drinking Liberally was a blast, since then the event has shrunk considerably and everybody seems to know one another, except for me. I lack the social skills (computer geek) to barge in on the conversation, so I’ve generally just found myself sitting at the bar, talking about football or something with somebody who’s not a part of the event, or jawing with a friend of mine who sometimes tends bar at Ten Stone on Tuesdays.

    Ah well.

  5. Ruth Says:

Whoa, sounds like my kind of night - you should just convince your wife to come out with you, that would solve the only problem with your Tuesdays!

And my older son is 7, so I’m thinking an introduction to the bar culture is just around the corner!
